Burlington kids make a splash
Burlington, Vermont - August 3, 2011
Wednesday was a great day for a long swim in Lake Champlain. And a group of adventurous kids from Burlington's Boys and Girls Club were up for the challenge.
The kids suited up to make the half-mile swim around Rock Point. They grabbed their life jackets and started the trip behind the Rock Point School. The swim wrapped up about an hour later when nine kids and their two counselors made it safely to shore at the far end of North Beach.
"This is my first time doing it and I wanted to try it out, but I was afraid of zebra mussels, so I kind of kept my feet above the water," said Courtnee Ward-Arnold, a member of the club.
"Tiring is one word to describe it. A really, really long swim I guess," said Phineas Totten, a member of the club.
This was the first summer the Boys and Girls Club sponsored the Lake Champlain swim. Counselors and many of the kids hope to do it again before they head back to school.
