The
dictionary describes a portrait as a representation of a person by an
artist. This definition is relatively loose and yet, when one thinks of
portraiture one typically imagines a painting or photograph of a human face.
This series of drawings and paintings attempts to broaden the spectrum of the
term “portraiture” by utilizing a variety of mediums and techniques. Each piece
is intended to conjure an image of a person - fictitious or real - and each
piece is an unconventional take on a seemingly conventional genre of art:
portraiture.
About the Artist
A native Vermonter, Sarah Graves has been crafting and painting, stitching and knitting, drawing and gluing since she was a kid. She majored in Studio Fine Arts at St. Lawrence University where she studied painting, drawing, printmaking and jewelry while also working as a seamstress in the University's costume department. Her varied background has led her to create a wide spectrum of art, running the gamut from hand-sewn stuffed animals to collage, pastel to portraits, family members and friends’ dogs. Sarah firmly believes that art is for everyone and she fully embraces and encourages a handmade lifestyle.
