Testimonials

“I like the Boys & Girls Club because it is a place to come and know it is safe and get my homework done.  Also, I like to hang out.  If I have nothing to do after school I can come and do my homework.  Because I’m coming here I’m getting good grades compared to when I didn’t come as much.”

Career Readiness & Life Skills Programs

The Boys and Girls Club of Burlington’s Career Readiness and Life Skills programs are designed to help youth plan their future, prepare and search for a job, learn the basics of personal finance, and seek opportunities for post secondary education. We help set our members on the right track to a successful future.

Early Promise: Bridge to a Better Future

college visist

The Boys and Girls Club of Burlington’s initiative, Early Promise: Bridge to a Better Future, is a program of year round social and academic support that aims to close the marked achievement gap that exists for our low-income and racially diverse membership. After more than five years of program development, relationship building, and organizational restructuring, Early Promise has been formally launched.

Built on national and community based models, Early Promise guarantees college admission and financial support for low income students if those students commit to and complete a series of social and academic requirements. A contractual relationship is formed between parents/guardians, the Club and the Vermont State Colleges. This relationship is designed to prove to the children that their families, their Club and their community care about their futures.

Some of the Early Promise Programs initiatives include:

· Daily ½ hour of homework help, called Power .5, at the Oak Street and Integrated Arts Academy Afterschool Programs.

· 21st Century Tutoring Program which matches Club kids with licensed teachers to provide individual tutoring in reading, writing, math and science for two hours each week.

· College and Careers program targeting Club kids in 4th- 8th grade. During the 2011-2012 school year Early Promise kids visited CCV, Johnson State College, Lyndon State College and St. Michaels College and met with students and staff to learn the importance of college.

· SAT Prep course taught by UVM Medical Students targeting 10th, 11th and 12th grade students interested in pursuing postsecondary education.

· Reading Buddies Mentoring Program that matches Club kids with a community member for one hour of reading each week.
