That place has meant soooo much to many many many people all around the country.... I know my children really utilized all that it had to offer and became better citizens because of it.

Nautilus

Hey Everybody! You have all heard of the Titanic, right? Do you know the name of the explorer that discovered this famous shipwreck? His name is Dr. Robert Ballard and in 1985 he discovered the HMS Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. After discovering the Titanic he received thousands of letters from children and since then it has been his goal to share his discoveries with them. In 2002 he helped to found the Immersion Learning program. This science education program brings ocean adventures and discoveries to kids in classrooms and in Boys & Girls Clubs. Part of this program consists of webcasts that feature streaming video from research vessels and ROV’s (unmanned submarines) on the ocean floor. That means that you are able to be watch these discoveries happening live on your computer. This summer, Dr. Ballard’s new ship, the Nautilus will set sail and will be exploring ancient shipwrecks, hydrothermal vents, and underwater volcanoes as it sails through the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Black Seas as well as the Indian Ocean. For the first time in history, these discoveries will be broadcast live, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the entire duration of this 5 month long journey. The link to this exciting new chapter in exploration can be found by visiting www.nautiluslive.org . For further information regarding the Immersion learning program visit www.immersionlearning.org

I am lucky enough to have been asked to join Dr. Ballard’s team aboard the Nautilus. In October of this year I will be traveling to Santorini, Greece and will be involved in the study and exploration of underwater volcanoes in the region. As an Educator at Sea I will be responsible for disseminating and sending video and audio from 20 different live feeds to “mission control” centers where Educators Ashore will put it onto the website. Our Burlington club is one of only a handful of B&G clubs around the country that are lucky enough to be chosen to participate in this monumental adventure. Throughout the summer we will be introducing the Immersion Program and the Nautilus Live webcasts to our youth and in the fall this program will become part of our core curriculum.
