Winner of the New England board of Higher Education’s 2007 Robert J. McKenna Award for Program Achievement, KnowHow2Go is the Club’s college and career readiness initiative. This program invites members to explore career choices and prepares them for the college process with the goal of encouraging and preparing them to pursue higher education. The curriculum provides these benefits:
Participants in the program meet on a regular basis for educational sessions and field trips to businesses and colleges. There are sessions specifically designed for two age groups: one for middle school youth, and one for members in high school. While participation is free of charge, a serious commitment is required from both the student and parent or guardians. Why college? The average lifetime earnings for individuals with associate degrees are almost 25% higher than the average lifetime earnings for high school graduates (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006). According to the New England Board of Higher Education’s 2007 Trends and Indicators, for every 100 9th graders attending public school in Vermont, 83 will graduate from high school, 36 will enter college the following fall, 28 will return to the same college for sophomore year, and only 22 will graduate college with 150% time. We work with our members to reduce the obstacles they face trying to navigate the maze of college preparation by guiding them through the processes involved in sitting for the SAT’s, applying for financial aid, and filling out college applications.
