Boys & Girls Club of Burlington Announces Grant Awards

Burlington, VTThe Boys & Girls Club of Burlington is pleased to announce grant awards from the Vermont Department of Labor, Citizens Bank Foundation, and the A.D. Henderson Foundation.  These grants will fund after school programs for over 2,300 youth in grades K-12 each year with a special emphasis on Career and College Readiness programming.

The Vermont Department of Labor has awarded the Boys & Girls Club of Burlington a $117,00 grant to provide summer employment opportunities across the state to eligible youth who face serious barriers to employment.  The grant, which is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will involve all six Boys & Girls Clubs in Vermont and will employ a minimum of 24 youth in the Clubs’ summer programs.  While employed, these youth will be offered job training and mentoring, with wrap around services through each Club’s teen programming throughout the school year.

The Citizens Bank Foundation has generously granted the Boys & Girls Club of Burlington $4,000 to run Money Matters: Make it Count, a national program developed by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.  Money Matters promotes financial responsibility and independence among Club members ages 13-18 by building their basic money management skills. Participants learn how to manage a checking account, budget, save and invest. They also learn about starting small businesses and paying for college.  This program, as with all others offered by the Club, is included in the nominal $5 yearly Club membership fee and is open to all youth who are age eligible.

The A.D. Henderson Foundation has granted the Boys & Girls Club of Burlington $15,000 to increase the scope of the Club’s award winning KnowHow2GO college and career readiness initiative for grades 6 - 12.  This funding will help pay for additional staff hours devoted to homework help and remedial educational assistance, increase the mentoring component to include more youth, and fund a trip to visit colleges and universities throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts in addition to the trips throughout Vermont that are already scheduled.
